Can you handle an unacceptable hotel room before it ruins your trip?

Can you handle an unacceptable hotel room before it ruins your trip?

by Ned S. Levi | Jan 30, 2023

Here’s how to recognize an unacceptable hotel room and how to ensure your actions don’t jeopardize your claims against the hotel. If you travel enough, eventually you’ll be disappointed with an unacceptable hotel room you booked. It might be that you...
Why “guaranteed late arrival” isn’t actually guaranteed for you

Why “guaranteed late arrival” isn’t actually guaranteed for you

by Janice Hough | Dec 28, 2022

Is a “guaranteed late arrival” always guaranteed? Always check. Years ago, many hotels would accept reservations without a credit card, but only hold the rooms until, say, 4 or 6 p.m. A credit card guaranteed late arrival, but also meant travelers that...
Everyone loves no mandatory hotel fees — it unites America

Everyone loves no mandatory hotel fees — it unites America

by Janice Hough | Dec 6, 2022

Mandatory hotel fees are different from airline fees. We live in polarized times. When President Biden recently talked about getting rid of “junk fees,” he hit on one thing about which almost all Americans agree. Almost all travelers worldwide agree —...
The hotel staff knows why you booked your bargain reservation

The hotel staff knows why you booked your bargain reservation

by Janice Hough | Oct 14, 2022

Your hotel room is a reason travel agents matter. They are the key to the magic of hotel human touch. When travelers check into hotels, they usually expect the hotel to have their name, credit card information, and bedding request. And their frequent guest membership...

Never do these 17 things in your hotel room to reduce hotel problems

by Ned S. Levi | Sep 19, 2022

To reduce hotel problems, I have 17 check-in errors and others during your stay. Do you think your hotel room is private, or at least mostly private? It may be somewhat private during your stay, especially if you request no housekeeping, but in reality, hundreds of...

Lodging properties hurt themselves with a discount hotel site that allows dishonest advertising

by Janice Hough | Aug 18, 2022

All hotel rooms are not created equal. Some are discounted. Others never are. Whenever I see the discount hotel site Trivago ad with the two women checking out, I get angry. One leaves happily with a $129 rate until she hears the next guest got a $99 rate, I get mad...

Accomplishments

These accomplishments have been achieved by working closely with our members, national media, the travel industry, the Department of Transportation (DOT), Congress and many other agencies.

  • Airlines Refunds: DOT enforcement notice that all airline tickets canceled by the airlines must be repaid to include all airfare, taxes and added fees with cash not airline credits.
  • Bi-partisan bill to eliminate hotel resort fees introduced into House of Representatives
  • Creation of the DOT Consumer Advocate to focus on aviation consumer protections
  • Full Fare Act — Advertised airfares now include all mandatory taxes and fees
  • Lost/damaged/delayed luggage compensation limit increased to $3,800
  • Denied boarding (bumping) compensation increased to a maximum of $1,550.
  • Passengers have 24 hours to change or cancel their nonrefundable tickets without penalty
  • Once airfare is purchased, that airfare and ancillary fees cannot be increased
  • Families flying together act passed by Congress that requires family members 13 years of age and younger to sit with other family members at no additional cost.
