Hate extra fees? Make sure to file comments with the CFPB

The Consumer Financial Protection Bureau (the CFPB) asks Americans to file comments and say they hate junk fees like hotel resort fees, banking fees, ticket fees, and any surprise extra fees. File comments. They want to hear about your experience with these fees. So please – tell them!

To help end hotel resort fees, you can give feedback about your experience. Submit a formal comment by clicking here and then clicking a statement that says “submit a formal comment.” This document has a comment period that ends on 03/31/2022.

The Federal Trade Commission has long been studying “drip pricing” (another word for extra fees). These are fees that are added to the “full advertised price.” Every consumer has experienced them and has hated being stuck with these additional and unadvertised fees. You all should go to the regulations.gov site and file comments in writing. That way, the government will know you are unhappy.

Writing to a government agency like this makes a difference. It helps lawmakers consider new issues they may not know about when drafting regulations. Writing a comment is a significant opportunity to make sure they hear your voice.

Let your government hear your concerns.

When submitting a comment, it can be just a sentence, and you do not have to leave your name. Still, for the ultimate impact, Travelers United recommends that you provide a quick introduction to who you are and where you live, Say how you encountered hidden fees while traveling, and conclude with how you would like to have the situation handled.

An example would be something like, “My name is Susie Gonzalez, and I live in California. Recently I stayed at The Knickerbocker Hotel in New York City in October 2019. I was shocked to learn that a $30 a day residence fee was added to the cost of my hotel room each day. This residence fee is more commonly known as a hotel resort fee. I was so disappointed to learn this fee was not part of the advertised price of a room. The fee did not seem to cover anything. I booked the hotel based on the listed price. I urge the government to make the advertised price of a hotel room the true price of a room. Please eliminate these hidden hotel fees.”

If you want to keep it even shorter, you could say something like, “My name is (    ), and I live in (   ). I strongly support a free market. Let consumers know the full price of an item. Please end hidden fees like hotel resort fees.”

The only way that we as consumers and voters have a chance to eliminate these junk fees is to let Congress and the federal government know that you do not like them.

Writing in to our government to tell them you hate these fees can have a real impact.
Please make the time to do this before March 31, 2022. Comments end that day!

The Consumer Financial Protection Bureau is a U.S. government agency that makes sure banks, lenders, and other financial companies treat you fairly and don’t hide fees from Americans.
