Why just avoiding the “worst” winter-weather airports may not be enough

by Janice Hough | Dec 28, 2010

Christmas may be over, but winter weather travel disasters are probably just beginning. So far this season, London Heathrow has been basically shut for a few days, and the New York area airports are just thinking about reopening after more than a 24-hour closure....

Deck-chair wars: When so many cruisers turn into Mr. (and Mrs.) Hydes

by Janice Hough | Dec 27, 2010

While unpleasant fellow travelers and vacationers often stick out in memory, I do firmly believe that most people are decent. While travel can be stress-inducing, bad behavior is fortunately an exception. The five percent jerk factor, while not scientific, is a pretty...

Big babies on planes — should airlines require proof of age?

by Janice Hough | Dec 20, 2010

The young couple on our red-eye flight to Charlotte were clearly at the end of their rope. Before the door had even closed, so were most of the people within earshot. While they seemed to be very nice people, and were clearly trying their best, they were traveling...

United Airline’s Red Carpet Club, like Delta’s Crown Room and American’s Admirals Club, is a favored refuge of frequent travelers. Though the annual membership dues have been going up and sometimes it’s often hard to find a place to sit down,...

Accomplishments

These accomplishments have been achieved by working closely with our members, national media, the travel industry, the Department of Transportation (DOT), Congress and many other agencies.

  • – Removal of restaurant fees from DC area eateries — this is an ongoing project
  • – Creation of DOT Dashboard to outline consumer rights after cancellation of a flight
  • – Bi-partisan bill to eliminate hotel resort fees introduced into House of Representatives
  • – Creation of the Advisory Committee for Aviation Consumer Protections
  • – Advertised airfares now include airfare plus, mandatory taxes and fees
  • – Lost/damaged/delayed luggage compensation limit increased to $3,800
  • – Passengers have 24 hours to change or cancel their nonrefundable tickets without penalty
  • – Once an airfare is purchased, that airfare and ancillary fees cannot be increased
  • – Families flying together act passed by Congress that requires family members 13 years of age and younger to sit with other family members at no additional cost.
