Spirit Airlines bankrupt! Start the refund process now!

Spirit Airlines bankrupt. Spirit ticket holders who paid with a credit or debit card should immediately initiate the chargeback process with their card issuer.

Spirit AirlinesSpirit Airlines bankrupt. They closed for business on Saturday, following the collapse of negotiations for a federal bailout. Many passengers across Spirit’s service areas were stranded as the airline quickly wound down operations Saturday morning. Passengers scrambled to find alternative flights to reach their destinations or return home.

Exacerbating the problem for stranded passengers and those with tight travel connections was the immediate shutdown of Spirit’s check-in counters and customer service centers. As is typical in bankruptcies, customers found themselves totally on their own.

Spirit Airlines has shuttered its company. Other airlines won’t directly honor their tickets.

By now, I hope all Spirit Airlines ticket holders fully realize that their flights are canceled and there is no hope of flying. Don’t go to the airport expecting to fly Spirit. If you think other airlines will honor those tickets, they won’t.

Spirit emerged from bankruptcy in March 2025, but just five months later, reentered it. A little more than a month ago, Spirit reached a restructuring agreement with bondholders, but when the federal government’s $500 million bailout fell through, the recent substantial rise in jet fuel costs made their restructure unsustainable. Spirit therefore shut down the airline.

For travel consumers holding Spirit Airlines tickets and/or Free Spirit loyalty program points, the question is what’s next.

If you paid for your tickets with a credit or debit card, Spirit states they will automatically refund your tickets.

Whether Spirit Airlines ticket holders will get refunds has a great deal to do with their payment method. Dave Davis, Spirit’s President and CEO, stated on Saturday, in his final message to Spirit employees and customers,

“Spirit will automatically process refunds for any flights purchased through Spirit with a credit or debit card to the original form of payment. Guests who booked flights via a travel agent should contact the travel agent directly to request a refund.”

If Spirit can process those ticket refunds for both credit and debit card users, that’s likely a big break for debit card users.

If companies, including airlines, experience significant flight delays or cease operations, under the Fair Credit Billing Act (FCBA), credit card companies are responsible for processing chargebacks or disputes. With Spirit Airlines ending its operations, credit card issuers became the primary focus for obtaining refunds for tickets paid with credit cards. The credit card issuer often provides a provisional credit during its investigation, so that Spirit ticket holders, in this case, wouldn’t have to continue being charged while the payment is disputed.

You are being secretly taxed at airportsFinancial experts recommend not waiting for Spirit’s automatic refund for tickets purchased with a credit card. Instead, contact your credit card company and start the chargeback process.

I’ve spoken to financial experts in the past about obtaining credit card refunds from bankrupt companies. The experts strongly recommended that credit card holders immediately initiate a chargeback. Rather than wait for the bankrupt company’s “automatic” refund. For Spirit, the DOT is also advising ticket holders who paid by credit card to start the chargeback process.

The protections offered to debit card holders are weaker than those for credit card holders. Debit card holders have limited protections, which are often seriously time limited. When a bankruptcy is involved, however, many debit card issuers will extend their time limits. While not required by FCBA, many banks voluntarily offer dispute protections similar to those of credit cards for debit card holders.

Financial experts recommend not waiting for Spirit’s automatic refund of tickets purchased with a debit card. Instead, immediately contact your bank or debit card issuer and request a chargeback.

Experts state that Spirit ticket holders who purchased their tickets not to wait. Instead, they should immediately contact their bank requesting a chargeback. If your bank refuses, you will have backup from Spirit Airlines if they can follow through on their credit and debit card refunds.

If you paid for your tickets via vouchers, credits, or points, you may not get a refund, and if you do get it, it will likely be quite some time before receiving it.

According to the May 2 Spirit Airlines statement, ticket holders who paid for the tickets using other methods, including vouchers, credits, or Free Spirit points, will have to wait for Spirit to determine how their ticket purchases will be handled during the bankruptcy process. If I were one of those ticket holders, I wouldn’t count on any tangible refund from Spirit. These ticket holders will likely have many other creditors who need to be paid before any monetary refund for their tickets.

Many U.S. airlines are offering special deals to Spirit ticket holders for a very limited time.

After you work on getting your refund for your Spirit Airlines tickets, you’ll need to think about your travel plans, and for many Spirit ticket holders, that means immediately. There is some limited help available from other airlines.

Allegiant Air is offering Spirit ticket holders 50 percent back in bonus points for its rewards program on tickets booked by May 12 and flown by June 20. Not all routes are eligible.

American Airlines is offering reduced fares on routes it overlaps with Spirit Airlines. Some of those routes may get additional rescue flights. American serves the vast majority of airports previously served by Spirit Airlines.

Delta Air Lines is offering reduced, nonrefundable fares for Spirit ticket holders in affected markets for five days from the Saturday shutdown. These options are available across all domestic markets where Spirit operates, including routes between the U.S. and Latin America. According to a statement at Delta’s news hub, these fares will be available to all customers.

Frontier Airlines is offering 50 percent off base fares across its network for selected flights purchased by May 10, for travel through May 19, for Spirit ticket holders.

More airlines.

JetBlue is offering $99 one-way fares on routes where it competes with Spirit for those who can prove they had a canceled Spirit ticket through May 6. The airline is also capping basic economy fares at $299 on flights between Fort Lauderdale, Florida, and San Juan, Puerto Rico, for new bookings for travel through May 8.

Southwest Airlines is offering one-way fares that can be purchased in person at ticket counters with proof of canceled Spirit Airlines tickets through May 6 on domestic routes where Southwest competed with Spirit.

United Airlines is offering one-way fares on routes where they competed with Spirit Airlines. Spirit ticket holders must provide proof of their Spirit flight purchase, including the confirmation number.

It’s very clear that if you want to take advantage of the special deals offered by other airlines to replace your Spirit tickets, you have to act quickly or you’ll miss the opportunity entirely. Moreover, not all Spirit ticket holders will be able to take advantage of these offers, particularly if their flights aren’t booked to fly in the near future.

Spirit Airlines Free Spirit loyalty program points are likely worthless now.

If you are a Spirit Airlines Free Spirit loyalty program member with lots of points, you’re likely wondering what will happen to them. The points are likely worthless. While it’s possible to receive payments for unused Free Spirit points, it’s highly unlikely, as those points will likely be last in line for payments from the bankrupt airline.

If you take nothing else from this column this morning, if you’re a Spirit Airlines ticket holder, you need to act immediately to get a refund and take advantage of the other airlines’ offers.
