Photos: Stairways to Santorini, Greece

Craig DeThomas made it from the Italian side of the Adriatic to Greece and then to the islands of the Aegean Sea. He left clouds, the occasional ochre yellow and burnt Sienna reds of Italy for the brilliant pastels of Greece. First Stop — Santorini with its volcanic beaches and towns that climb the steep hillsides. He found a great perspective.

The stairways of Santorini are the threads that link the village, the web that brings fishermen and merchants together with townspeople and tourists. Weaving their way between brightly colored buildings these stairs serve as the pathways of communication today as they have for centuries.

Sometimes the colors make one forget the pedestrian nature of stairs. They are not there to be appreciated architecturally, or seen as works of art. Stairs are a means of moving from Point A to Point B. That’s it. But, some stairs do their duty beautifully and colorfully and dance and sing out in the changing sunlight. Others just do their job gray and silently. I’d rather climb through colors to a brilliant blue sky that descend through a drab world.
