Accompanied by her replacement, the Queen Mary 2, the Queen Elizabeth 2 set sail for the last time last week out of New York bound for Dubai. There she will live out her life as a hotel, like the Queen Mary, now berthed in Long Beach, Calif.
Carol Marlow, president of Cunard Line, who owns the Queen Elizabeth 2, tells Reuters that the QE2 will ‘”always be remembered as the best loved ship in the world and we are delighted that she will be cherished by future generations of travelers at her new home in Dubai.”‘
The QE2 has carried more than 2.5 million passengers including Hollywood celebrities Elizabeth Taylor, Paul Newman, and Bob Hope. Even Queen Elizabeth II, Prince Charles and Princess Diana have been on board. During the Falkland War in 1982, the ship has served as a hospital ship, transporting injured troops.
Cunard will debut the Queen Elizabeth when it is slated for completion in 2010.
