A week in review: DOT imposes fines on Delta, A new Congress, Economy class, Fuel Surcharges and more

Delta Airlines is contesting a fine imposed by DOT. Delta is accused of failing to disclose code-share details about flights. Read Charlie Leocha’s article about why this is a big problem.
Ned Levi’s article about Marriott Corporation seeming to throw in the towel on its efforts to stop use of personal WiFi works is also an important read. Travelers United was the only consumer advocacy group working to guarantee travelers freedom to use WiFi of their choice. The battle is not over.
The 114th United States Congress brought us 71 new members. However, the organization of the new Congress is not yet set. Many subcommittees positions are still not finalized, but will be in the next two weeks.
Meeting with new Representatives and Senators and their staff will take time and shoe leather in the House and Senate office buildings. Travelers United will work to update many of these members about consumer travel issues involving airlines, the air traffic system, hotels, rental cars, rail and cruise lines.
Other stories this week include:

  • economy class and whether it’s getting an upgrade or downgrade
  • why airline fuel charges are still sky high
  • Marriott’s U-turn on their Wi-Fi hotspots
  • Edinburgh, Scotland

Economy class gets an upgrade – or is it a downgrade?
Not all upgrades are the same. In fact, Alaska’s and Delta’s are worth closer looks, because they offer dramatically different visions of air travel in 2015.
One reason why airline fuel surcharges are still sky high
When airlines apply discounts and commissions to airfares, it behooves them to keep the fare low and raise the surcharges. That way they keep more money on discounts and pay less commissions on sales
