If you’re one of the millions of Americans completely smitten by the PBS Emmy award-winning series Downton Abbey, and you’re as wealthy as the Earl of Grantham, you can immerse yourself in the show’s Edwardian setting. NoteWorthy Events, a bespoke custom tour operator, is offering a first-class, full-day, private tour of Highclere Castle, the real Downton Abbey.
Highclere’s current owners, the Earl and Countess of Carnarvon, will meet guests upon arrival for tea and coffee in the Countess’ private morning room. After a guided tour through the state rooms with either the Earl or the Countess, a private lunch, featuring wines from the Earl’s cellar will be served in the State Dining Room. Afterwards, explore the estate in one of the Earl’s private 4-by-4 off-road vehicles. Among the highlights are the grave of the 5th Earl of Carnarvon, who funded and assisted in investigations that led to the 1922 discovery of Tutankhamen’s tomb, and the ruins of an Iron Age fort. Or take a guided tour of Highclere’s Egyptology exhibition.
Finish the day with High Tea with the Countess, and upon departure, received complimentary copies of Lady Fiona Carnavron’s books, including Lady Almina and the Real Downton Abbey. Alas, there’s no mention of meeting Violet the Dowager Countess, Carson the Butler, or the mysterious Mr. Bates.
The tour costs approximately $12,090 for up to four people and advance registration is required.
I have three passions in life: Maine, traveling and skiing. Okay, four: chocolate. Maybe five, spa-ing (is there such a word?). I guess writing would be my sixth passion. And cheese, oh yeah, artisan-crafted and farmstead cheeses. Did I mention lobster? What can I say, I’m a passionate kinda gal. You can find more of my tips for traveling through Maine at: Maine Travel Maven. My three Moon Maine guidebooks are — Maine, Coastal Maine, and Acadia National Park. They are available at bookstores and online.
