Video: Baggage rights if delayed, damaged or stolen

This is the first of a new series from Travelers United. Travel Tips provide basic travel rights information. Unfortunately, even after repeated requests and the offer of funding, airports and airlines refuse to put posters and information about baggage rights, or other consumer rights up at airports. Travelers United continues to fight for clear disclosure of passenger rights, and new has started this series of Travelers United consumer videos.

The basic rule is that passengers are allowed $3,500 per passenger of compensation according to Department of Transportation regulations for baggage delayed, damaged, or lost during domestic travel. For international travel compensation is governed by the Montreal Convention — loss per passenger is 1,131 Special Drawing Rights that are worth around US$1,600.
